- Luzzatto, Samuel David (Shadal)
(1800-65)
Italian scholar, philosopher, biblical commentator and translator. From 1829 he was professor at the Padua Rabbinical College. He wrote studies of the Bible, Hebrew grammar and philology, Jewish liturgy, Hebrew poetry, and philosophy. In addition he edited the poems of Judah ha-Levi, translated parts of the Bible into Italian, and composed poetry in Hebrew in traditional Italian style. He was opposed to the kabbalah and criticized several Jewish philosophers including Maimonides, Ibn Ezra and Spinoza. His correspondence with other Jewish scholars is of historical importance.
